Gig of the Year

The Courettes at Barlinnie

If you’re anything like me, nearly every gig you go to is the best gig, because it’s the most recent one, you’ve just lived in the moment, the rush of adrenaline is still there and you’re walking away still buzzing from immersing yourself in the glow left by the performance.

A massive genuine thank you to all the bands that put themselves out there and throw their all into their live performances, sometimes to a small gathering but still holding nothing back, bringing both tears and laughter, joy and melancholy, triggering a range emotions at each performance and leaving indelible marks on the audience. And thanks to the gig promoters and venues for putting on the gigs.

I’d list every gig I go to as my gig of the year, whether that be the bands I’ve seen multiple times, the bands I’ve finally seen and ticked off my bucket list, the support bands that have gone on to be some of my favourite new bands. I salute you all. You are all shining stars that bring joy to my days, giving the opportunity to forget how shite life is a lot of the time, even if it just for a couple of hours, by immersing myself in the music, nothing else matters.

I’m only going to list one gig here then, not because none of the others are worth listing, but because I’d end up going and lusting EVERY gig I’ve been at this year. The reason I’m listing this one is, not just because they’re one of the hardest working/hardest gigging bands out there, but because it was a unique opportunity, thanks to Colin from Under the Wires to experience a gig in a venue like no other I’ve experienced before, and probably never will again.  Kudos to Colin and The Courettes, and to the staff in Barlinnie for putting on the show as part of a series of events for inmates. It was certainly a gig I’ll never forget.
