Cockwomble All of the Koney! None of the Style! EP cover

Cockwomble : All of the Money! None of the Style! EP review

Cockwomble

My favourite modern made-up word and one of the new derogatory terms aimed at the 45th person, I use the term loosely, to run the most powerful country in the word. By default, then, also my favourite new band name, alongside Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

All of the Money! None of the Style!

The band’s four track EP of alt-pop/punk injected with an element of humour proves that you can be in a band with a sense of humour, have fun, enjoy what you do, but aim to make a point with your music while making a pleasing racket at the same time.… Read the rest

Voicex plus plus CD cover

Voicex plus plus – CD review

Voicex plus plus

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy of Voicex plus plus CD. The 8 track CD was given away to anyone pre-ordering tickets for their recent Leith Depot gig . I couldn’t make the gig, but the band had some CDs left that can be purchased by contacting the band/Paul. I think they may be gone now, but I’m sure if there is a demand, more can be produced.

Post-punk supergroup

Voicex are a genuine post-punk supergroup, featuring ex-members of luminaries like the influential and fabled Scars (Paul Research), Boots for Dancing & Gin Goblins (Coco Whitson) and Matt Vinyl & the Decorators (Colin Bendall) and contributions from current Fire Exit guitarist (also of Heavy Drapes, Twisted Nerve and Baby’s Got a Gun) Richie Simpson.… Read the rest

Reaction Days of Eldorado

Reaction/Desperate Measures – Split 7″ on Tarbeach

Tarbeach new release

I have finally got round to a wee write-up of Tarbeach Records latest release. Apologies for the delay, its been out a while now. It is another collector’s slab of shocking pink coloured vinyl on 7 inch. On one side a new song from Tarbeach regulars, Airdrie’s Reaction. New Zealand’s Desperate Measures, with Vive Le Rock’s Eugene Butcher, featuring on the AA. This is another Tarbeach release to savour and treasure.

Eldorado

Eldorado definition: the name of a fictitious country or city abounding in gold, formerly believed to exist somewhere in the region of the Orinoco and Amazon Rivers or more generally a place of great abundance.… Read the rest

Gig Crowd

Gig Etiquette – or how not to piss someone off at a gig

Gig Etiquette

Having recently been to see the magnificent The The live at the famous Glasgow Barrowland, I felt inspired to write this slightly tongue in cheek commentary on gig etiquette.

Why, I hear you ask?

Firstly, there were posters all around the venue urging us to enjoy the live music experience, well…live I suppose. Matt Johnson’s opening request on taking to the stage was the same – please don’t video, leave your phones in your pockets and enjoy the live experience.

Secondly, was at one point being stuck behind a bloke of Andre the Giant proportions who appeared to have taken up ballet dancing instead of wrestling .… Read the rest

The Apparents Wull Mackers

The Apparents – Singin’ Songs & Righting Wrongs

The Apparents

The Apparents new CD album dropped through the letterbox the other day. Having previously reviewed their earlier EP, I was looking forward to popping the CD from the box and listening to the latest offering.

Singin’ Songs & Righting Wrongs

Singin’ Songs and Righting Wrongs. The album title sums up pretty much what you can expect from listening. There is no hiding the bands political leanings given the subject matter, or should I say targets, of some of the songs. Expect passionate rants aplenty, but don’t imagine for a minute that this band are po-faced protesters without a sense of humour.… Read the rest

PYLON

PYLON : Review, Mitchell Theatre, Glasgow

PYlon Live

Let me start by saying, whatever I write about Pylon will not do it justice.

There was a buzz around a packed Mitchell Theatre, a sense of anticipation as the audience filled the auditorium. There had been a bus stopped outside just as we arrived at the theatre, I assumed a contingent having travelled over from Kilmarnock especially for the show on its debut in Glasgow. The hubbub around the theatre was celebratory and there was a real sense of warmth as people greeted each other, seeing faces they recognised. A real sense of community. A sense of community totally reflected in Pylon.… Read the rest

The The Comeback Glasgow poster

The The – Barrowland, Glasgow 4th September 2018

The The – back in Glasgow

Yes, The The, back. Having spoken to several people, I know there was much anticipation and expectation for the return of Matt Johnson and The The to Glasgow for two gigs on adjacent nights in very different venues Several people I knew had purchased tickets for tonight’s gig and the following evening in the more salubrious surroundings of the Royal Concert Hall.

When the dates were announced though, for me there was no contest, I knew I had to be at Barrowland. For many, The Apollo was Glasgow’s iconic venue, unfortunately, by the time I stated my gig going, the Apollo was already a thing of the past, so to me the Barrowland Ballroom will always be Glasgow’s premier live venue.… Read the rest

Richard Jobson Live Banner

The Speed of Life – review Glasgow 9th September

The Speed of Life

It seems like I had been looking forward to being entertained by Richard Jobson, punk frontman, actor, author, model, presenter, raconteur and the multi-talented Martin Metcalfe writer, musician, composer, artist for aeons when the day finally came around. With those two involved it was sure to be an interesting and intriguing evening’s entertainment.

We were glad to finally take our seats having endured the typical Scottish summertime in getting to The Admiral. Sun splitting the sky, interspersed with monsoon like rain. In typical fashion the sunny bits were just before leaving the house and while waiting in the station/on then train.… Read the rest

PYLON

PYLON – Theatre preview: 15th September Mitchell Theatre, Glasgow

PYLON

Glasgow theatre-goers and live music fans have an opportunity to see a the highly acclaimed production, PYLON, at the Mitchell Theatre on the 15th of September. This is the third outing for the unique and exciting production, based on real life events in Shortlees, Kilmarnock, which has been given high praise by critics on its previous showings. The performance is more than just theatre, as it includes live music more akin to live music gigs than stage acting.

The play tells the story of residents of Shortlees through the eyes of Davie who is searching for answers when questions are raised about the electricity pylons in the area causing an increased level of cancer diagnoses in the area.… Read the rest
