The Laurettes – “mini” gig review, HMV Glasgow re-opening

On the day their brand new single Witches was released, the dynamic duo of Lynette and Lauren were joined by bass player Ari (with a tres chic bodiless stand up bass), and drummer extraordinaire Lesley (aka Soup from The Hedrons) for a short but sweet five song set.

After a hastily made new acquaintance, the sound man for the previous band, the quintessential quartet were set up and ready to go, wasting no time in getting the fairly sizeable gathering in the HMV basement going with Burn, encouraging sing-a-longs from the off. Like I said when I reviewed their live performance with The Hedrons, if you want party started, invite The Laurettes. Their sound has its base within the Scottish trad/folk scene, with lessons lifted from the school of rock, certainly Lesley brought the thunder, a joy to watch every time she performs, one minute a picture of studied focus, the next a huge grin spreading across her face.

The song that first got the band noticed, Home Bird, followed, unashamedly a song celebrating their Scottish roots and bringing the crowd along on their journey. before another joyous slice of celebration in the form of Main Stage, a song which speaks of the love of festivals they chatted about with me when I interviewed them at the start of the week, of playing them, but more importantly, the sense of camaraderie and lifetime friendships made.

Talking of lifetime friendships, a Laurettes gig isn’t a Laurettes gig without the song about their friendship forged in Dunoon with Stuart, the one and only Techno Viking. Despite Lauren saying she wouldn’t force us to do the Heave Ho as we were in HMV, a dedicated trio got down on the floor to perform the now traditional Viking Longboat “dance”.

Of course , on the day of its release, the final song in their rousing set could only be Witches, raising a cheer from the friends, family and existing fans of the band, and by the end of the performance gaining new fans from those who had just turned up out of curiosity.

Don’t forget to download and stream the single Witches and help The Laurettes to a high chart placing.

  1. I think you took a shot or two of us doing the heave-ho. Any chance you send me a copy.
Excellent review and pics. I think you are like me in seeing them first at The Hedrons gig and becoming hooked.
