Nicol & Elliott – The Storm EP

Nicol & Elliott The Storm EP

The second EP from the wonderful Nicol & Elliott hit all good streaming platforms on Friday at midnight.

A fitting time, the midnight hour. The black of night, but the start of a new day with all the possibilities that may bring, full of opportunity or dripping in an uneasy uncertainty…

This EP features two of the duo’s (and their band) singles from last year. The EPs title track along with the brooding and sensitive portrayal of abusive relationships that is Dragging Me Down.

If you’ve heard these singles, you’ll not be disappointed with the songs they are joined with on this EP. While the atmosphere across the four tracks is one of an unsettling feeling of foreboding, a theme borne out by the lyrical content of the songs. “The Storm is on the rise…”, “Snake Eyes gonna steal my soul..”, the music stirs the soul awakening your emotions.

New Songs

The new songs on show, Snake Eyes and Down in Flames, continue to display the themes and signature sound that make Nicol & Elliott such an engaging and gratifying listen. The effective use of violin and the shared harmonious lead vocals create a resonance that is uniquely Nicol & Elliot.

Snake Eyes starts with a mournful violin lament, before adding a driving beat, layering the dual lead vocal, and adding further layers and texture until the song reaches its peak. While on the face of it, Down in Flames may appear to be understated, telling a downbeat tale… “your dreams will be forgotten”, you can’t help but be drawn in by the sheer charm and beauty that the coupling of the graceful playing and affecting vocal brings.

Stick on your headphones, turn the volume to max, close your eyes and revel in the exquisitely captivating musicianship, the harmonious rhythms and losing yourself in the engaging intensity of the storytelling.
