Singles Round Up Part 11 – November 2022

Penultimate round up for 2022…

Klubber Lang – The Sad Professor

Another thunderous behemoth of a tune from Dublin’s Klubber Lang, this time the huge riffs, pounding rhythm and caustic vocals sounding like the bastard child of an unholy coupling between Therapy? and The Fall.

Klubber Lang

Less Killjoy – Sad Girl Suburbia

Sad Girl Suburbia manages to be somehow melancholic and full of rage in equal measures as Less Killjoy releases the last song from her upcoming EP Punk Grenade. The lyrics of this beats led grunge guitar driven song reflects her attempts are trying to fit in while growing up before discovering her own path and sticking a middle finger up to the world.… Read the rest

Singles Round Up 2022 October

Singles Round Up Part 10 – October 2022

We’re well into the last quarter of the year now so it is time to share the third last selection of the best singles, demos and other tracks that have been earworms for The Ginger Quiff during the month of October… as usual I’ve added any that are on the evil corporate musician shafting platform that is Spotify for you to try, then go and buy music, merch and gig tickets from the bands.

Reaction – Bad Trip Express

Much like their forebears The Clash (just as long as we don’t get a Cut the Crap at some point), Lanarkshire punks Reaction have never been a band to stand still, rest on their laurels or become complacent with their sound.… Read the rest

September round up

Singles Round Up Part 9 – September 2022

two thirds of the way through the year and time for another round up of the best singles, demos, live tracks and general goodness that has come my way by hook or by crook throughout the month of September.

bis – Lucky Night

It’s your lucky day, bis returned in September with their new single Lucky Night, a song packed with bis goodness and accompanied by an engrossing CGI video packed with clones of the bis threesome. The upbeat electropop anthem bemoaning dodgy nightclub chat up lines “a boy walked up to me…” It’s bis, what’s not to love?

The Nightingales – Bloody Breath

From their new album The Last Laugh is this slice of Nightingales brilliance, layering addictive driving rhythms starting with an incessant piano riff before adding throbbing bass and adding instrument after instrument to create an insanely hypnotic melee, all topped off with Robert Lloyd’s distinctive low, almost menacing brogue and you have sheer perfection.… Read the rest

Pizza Crunch – Wilting Youth

They’ve gone from Young Excitement to Wilting Youth. I know my youth is well and truly wilted… but inside I’m still 19, and listening to the constant stream of top quality singles from Glasgow’s Pizza Crunch helps keep me that way. Well, most of the time… Wilting Youth is the latest in a long line of their infectious post-punk tinged singles.… Read the rest

Singles Round Up 2022 – Part 5/6 – May/June

In an effort to clear my backlog, its a bumper singles round up this time around….as usual, there should be something for everyone here,

Michael Monroe – Can’t Stop Falling Apart/Everybody’s Nobody

When it comes to good time rock ’n’ roll you can’t get much better than Finland’s premier rock star, Michael Monroe, two recent singles here in the shape of the bluesy Can’t Stop Falling Apart and in the nostalgia fuelled Everybody’s Nobody. I look forward to seeing his energetic live show again next year.

Singles Round Up 2022 – Part 4 – April (yes, I know its June now…)

The Bikini Bottoms – The Game

When Jack moved to London and Evan announced his departure from The Bikini Bottoms thought it was all over. Then Jack announced a new line-up and a new single in Monster Love and all was well with the world again.… Read the rest

Singles Round Up 2022 – Part 2 – February

Singles Round Up 2022 Part 2

2022. Two months in already and not a dish done… that’s now confused half the readers at least.

However, good things come in small packages, and the number of singles that have kept me going throughout February has provided a wheen of good things.

I just need to get around to writing about all the big packages and all the amazing LPs the postman has kindly been delivering over the last couple of months (much to the consternation of Mrs Quiff)

The news of rescheduled gigs and UK tours was coming thick and fast too. None more welcome than from band of the year from 2021, The Courettes, who are returning to Glasgow in June as part of their 2022 tour.… Read the rest

Singles Round Up 2021 Pt 14

Singles Round Up 2021 -Part 14

Never say never, but I’m pretty sure this will be the last singles round up of 2021. Some fantastic songs have surfaced this year. And there are probably even more that have passed me by. Here’s a selection of some of the one’s that have hit my inbox recenty and caught my ear…

Billy Sinclair – The One For You

Billy Sinclair’s latest single is stonking romp of a tune, if there was such a genre as glam country then this would be it. Soulful backing vocals complement the riffing with a catchy singalong chorus which lays out the protagonists case to get the girl…

Dreamkids – Metamorphosis A/A

Dreamkids follow up the video for the powerfully affecting It Must Be Nice and its focus on mental health with the double A side of their single Metamorphosis We Are Young a compelling grunge tinged emo rock song with a hint of Dolores O’Riordan in the vocals.… Read the rest

Singles Round Up 2021 – Part 13

We are fast approaching the end of 2021, but the songs keep on coming with no sign of a let up. Here is singles round up number 13 for the year. Who knows there may even be a 14… If I was superstitious there would have to be. With each one new song that comes out, the decision for singles of the year becomes harder and harder…

Here we go again – in no particualre order…

James Domestic – Push on Through

A throbbing hypnotic bass line pervades the air, before adding a keyboard melody and some angular post punk guitars, ad a vocal that sounds like Ian Dury has joined Sleaford Mods and you’re about there with this hypnotic alternative fucked up caffeine fried road song.… Read the rest

Singles Round Up 2021 – Part 12

Another round of up of singles, EPs, tracks and demos that have grabbed my attention recently. Kicking off with a few LNFG releases…

Annie Booth – Tropic

Annie releases the second offering from her upcoming album, Lazybody, which is due out on the 19th of November. The follow up to Cocoon, Tropic, is yet another slice of touchingly atmospheric and expressive alt-pop laden with stirring strings and a suitably autumnal video. Annie’s sensitive and eloquent vocal has the usual comforting, protective effect as the song reaches its glorious zenith. Annie is playing a Lazybody album launch gig on the 28th November in the perfectly intimate setting of The Glad Cafe.… Read the rest
