2025 has got off to a bang with some singles that I imagine I’ll still be loving in 12 months as we reach the end of the year. As usual there is an eclectic mixes of styles representing in this cross section of what January had to offer, this is Part 1, I’ll include a link to a playlist of ALL of January’s featured singles when I get to the last part…
Voitures – Doesn’t Know It Yet
A great start to the year from Glasgow’s Voitures with buzzsaw guitars aplenty on this addictive slice of psych rock that channels elements of The Beatles and Mansun on the hypnotic Doesn’t Know It Yet. You don’t know it yet, but this song will remain lodged in your own psyche for days after first listen….
Novelistme – Doing Something
For some reason when I listen to this song, I get pictures in my head of left-field indie genius Beck fronting Leeds indie legends, the mighty Cud… anyway with Doing Something Novelistme continue on their journey of creating complex and perfectly formed indie pop anthems.
The Double Diamond Club – The Double Diamond Club
“A warm welcome one and all to the Caerphilly Double Diamond Club”… the opening couplet that introduces this gem of a song from the genius that is the one and only Helen Love alongside John MOuse signals the re-opening of the doors of the South Wales venue which played host to many of the greats of the 1970s. The irrepressible indie-legend Love alongside partner in crime MOuse create an unstoppable raucous adrenaline fuelled glam punk stomp of a song in their eponymous debut single. A perfect way to shake off the January blues…
Burnt Log – Sleeping
“Here’s your 26 for ’25” was the quip in the message introducing me to Burnt Log’s single Sleeping, a brash statement with just the right element of confidence and chutzpah to make me want to listen… and I was glad I did, Sleeping is a dramatic single, with a pleading and earnest vocal that demonstrates a desperation to get through to the person the lyrics are aimed at, with an element of resignation as the song fades “Lift your face, Still sleeping. You’re sleeping, Still sleeping.”
The Browning – Blue (Da Ba Dee)
I detested the original version of this song from the moment I first head it, then perhaps detested it even more so as a certain Scottish club started playing it in their stadium (probably the same reason I can’t bear to listen to Tina Turner’s The Best). By rights then, I should hate this, but when it appeared in my inbox I was curious enough to press play and found myself playing it a second time! And a third… and fourth… Addictive.
The Eddies – The Rage
The latest single from Dundee punk legends The Eddies is exactly what you would want from them, and a single titled The Rage. An intense driving energy is at the core of the song, the rhythm section propelling the band through The Rage, topping things of with high octane fiercely crunching riffs and a furiously ardent vocal.
