November Singles – Part 3

We’re nearing the end of November and the singles keep on coming, with another motley bunch hitting the airwaves since I out pen to paper for the last batch… once again there is sureky somethonh here for every taste, with the young Scottish crew making an impression, and another few songs vying for the title of Single of the Month for November.

First up in this part is the latest single from Jo Carley and the Old Dry Skulls side project Carley’s Wreck and Ruin, Jo’s familiar vocal capturing me under her spell immediately as her bewitching voice repeats the song’s title Devil’s Got The Poison.… Read the rest

Son of the Right Hand – EP launch gig – Glad Cafe

It had been too long since I’d been at a gig in the Glad Cafe, especially considering that it and The Rum Shack are my local venues. It was especially great to walk into the venue knowing what I was going to witness, such is the beguiling and intriguing nature of the music of Son of the Right Hand. Clearly the feeling was mutual given the hubbub and upbeat buzz around the cosy and welcoming venue right from doors open. I had a good feeling that it was going to be a gig to remember.

Before the band got to officially launch their EP, we had two support bands to entertain us, with eclectic styles to mix things up a bit.… Read the rest

November Singles… the next batch

With Brontës having laid down the gauntlet and got the challenge for single of the month off to a flier with their captivating new song San Francisco, it is down to all comers to try to snatch the title from their grasp. The next batch for November has revealed some strong contenders, with a huge showing from some rival Scottish acts…

The Treasury’s in Love is the new single from indie-folksters Elgin and the Marbles, and is a clever lyrical take on all things wrong with the current state of the finances of these shores, seemingly made worse with each new chancellor who wanders into 11 Downing Street.

Singles… so far…

November is still in it’s infancy but by the end of last week, there was a flurry or singles that were on my radar. I’ll leave my favourite until last, but let’s kick things off with Death Valley Girls who have already left Halloween behind and have their minds on the next holiday season on the sublime Season of Dreaming, a swoonsome Christmas offering shrouded in atmospheric tenor saxophone, with the addition of bells to give it that Christmas vibe. As Bonnie Bloomgarden sings of “dreaming of the year you will make” and the “season for dreaming and believing” they do feel like the perfect band to bridge the seasons, with plenty of their spooky psych-goth remaining, and just enough festive spirit to start the feels.… Read the rest

Brògeal – Tuesday Paper Club – album review

There are a couple of old schools of thought, one that says you should start as you mean to go on, and another that says you should go big or go home…

Falkirk folk-punks Brògeal clearly live by both of those adages, laying their cards in the table and going massive from the off with their hugely addictive anthem in the shape of the album’s title track. As a single I had rarely been able to listen to the song just once, this is a sign of the infectious nature of the songs across the rest of the album, and a solid guarantee of the pressing of the restart button at the end of the first listen…and the second…and…

The Tuesday Paper Club melds traditional celtic instruments with electric guitar and a melodic bouyant drinking song lyric to create a joyous singalong footstomper of gargantuan proportions.… Read the rest

House Guest Festival 2025 – Review

In 2024, the inaugural House Guest Festival was such a roaring success, I had high hopes and expectations for this years event. My hopes were most definitely not dashed as Scottish Music Collective & Crowded Flat pulled off another cracker of an event, planned perfectly and executed with a pinpoint precision, with timings being a major factor in events such as this, everything flowed as gracefully as as a swam gliding across water, but I’m sure this meant no end of unseen frantic exertion behind the scenes. Kudos to all involved.

Count the Days

The Sankaras opened proceedings in Sleazys, but my starter for 10 for the day was a furiously energetic Count the Days.… Read the rest

The Gorgeous Pouting Mr AR ft. Carla J Easton – Hands in the Air

Hands in the Air feels like a dancefloor smash akin to a Scottish Murder on the Dancefloor, or along the lines of a banging Moloko track, whatever the comparison I may be trying to make, the song has a huge sound, with a real (showing my age here) disco sound, and when you cap that off with the distinctive vocals of a distinguished Ms Carla J Easton, you’re onto a winner.

The Gorgeous Pouting Mr AR

Second City Sin – Morose

Morose has a strong driving rhythm with plenty of intensely ardent riffs, paired with a suitably passionate and earnest vocal delivery befitting of a song with such a title.… Read the rest

The Mushroom Club – Afraid

Trippy psych sounds abound on February single Afraid from Glasgow based garage rock band The Mushroom Club.

Pales – Uppercut

Uppercut comes from French alt-rockers Pales latest EP, Crush. Both the title of the EP and single are appropriate adjectives to describe the sound of the band, the crushing intensity of the guitar riffs and the layering of vocals and instruments on the single coming together in a glorious melee and rising to a knockout crescendo

Perhaps not one to add to your workplace playlists, as Self Esteem celebrates every sexual position imaginable but draws the line at….… Read the rest

The Countess of Fife – Betwixt and Between – EP Review

I was fortunate to get the opportunity to spend some time in the company of Scottish music icon Fay Fife towards the end of last year and have the pleasure of an in-depth chat about her Countess of Fife project. Our catch up coincided with her reaching the Kickstarter campaign target for her second album, A Woman of Certain Wisdom, in the guise of The Countess of Fife, following the runaway success of her first album Star of the Sea, which had also just seen its second pressing.

You can read the whole interview here

When we spoke, Fay alluded to an EP that would be released ahead of A Woman Of Certain Wisdom later this year, featuring early versions of songs she had recorded for the new album.… Read the rest

Gates of Light – Advance

An incessant drum beat underlining Louise Quinn’s shimmering vocal gives way to an intense throbbing electro baseline (that somehow gives me 1980s TV show Miami Vice vibes) which gets under the skin as Louise’s breathy dreamlike, almost otherworldly, vocal begins to take hold and give you a woozy spaced out feeling that entrances you and you can’t help but let yourself be taken under its spell.

Sweet Unrest – How Are You Feeling?

The energy ramps up several notches when Sweet Unrest pick up the baton and runs with it, pounding staccato drums set the furious pace picked up by frenetic guitar bursts, everything coming together like an inescapable burning fireball hurtling towards earth.… Read the rest
