Today sees the release of the latest single, Laughing at You, from the new album by Paul Morricone Go Sanction Yourself released on April 19th on Wrath Records. The Ginger Quiff is delighted to bring you the video premiere of the single.
This single, alongside other tracks in the album such as ‘Dining Out (On That Particular Buffet)’ (“about about a certain floppy haired “pantomime philanderer”), has a strong political message in it’s lyrics:
“Well I, I for one
Welcome our new insect overlords
Said the turkey voting for
Navidad and a Joyeaux Noel”
Paul Morricone on Laughing at You:
“This track started off as an exercise in minimalism – could I write just a bassline and create a song? Yes! I then summoned the early eighties pop powers of Blancmange and doubled the LinnDrum beats with Ant’s massive kit and Mitch’s bulbous bass. The chorus came first with the observation that as you see those in power chortling over their decisions, they are laughing at you, not with you. The rest is story of those foolish enough to be duped at the last election for supporting someone they thought was ’their mate’. He’s not.“
and on the self-directed video for the single…
We shot the video in one afternoon at Silkwood Studio, where I regularly film. I kept the performance simple, then got the guys to go to town with their paintbrushes all over the footage until it took on a life of its own. It helps when you run a production company and have a team of very talented animators and editors working with you. Even so, directing my own music videos is a bit like trying to cut my own hair.“
