The lead track on this 3 track EP from Turning Black Like Lizards is fast becoming a go-to tune on my playlists. In fact, all three tracks are.
This EP is yet another reason to seek out what is below the surface noise of the shite that clogs up the majority of mainstream airwaves and the charts these days (for what they are worth).
Don’t settle for what the industry thinks you should be listening to. Get off your arse and seek out music that stimulates rather than that which is designed to torpify.
Spiral Eyes is an awesome anthem that spans countless music influences with great effect. Languid laidback space rock vocals with shoegaze/60s psychedelic pop leanings, an insistent guitar line and a nod towards stalwarts of the alternative music scene, Jesus and Mary Chain.
The backbone of Always Staring at the Sun is a hypnotic bassline Tina Weymouth would kill for. The track layers and builds to a crescendo of fuzzy screeching guitars, the initially insouciant nonchalant vocal, increases in urgency as the track progresses.
EP closer, Watch the Flowers hints at a heavier, grungier sound, repetitive driving guitars hitting the sweet spot accompanied by crashing cymbals and thunderous drums.
Looking forward to future releases from the band, who are playing a number of gigs in the coming weeks and months – check out their facebook page for more info and to order the EP.
