I’ve been lucky this week to hear an exclusive track from The Cundeez. Hot off the presses and the latest track recorded for their up and coming album “Teckle and Hide” (due for an Autumn release). I will admit when I saw them teasing a clip of it on their Facebook page recently it was a bit of an eyebrow raiser and something I certainly wouldn’t have expected.
If you’ve heard the last few songs to come from The Cundeez camp over the last coupla years, you’ll know they’ve been on fire.
Take their split single with Texas Mod Crushers that came out on Tarbeach a while back. Eh’m Feelin’ Teckle. If that isn’t the ultimate in feel good anthems, I don’t know what is. I defy you to try to listen to it while sitting oan yer dowp. Its impossible, and the song will bring a brah wide smile to yer face as you skank around the house.
Then more recently, there was the anthem to the phenomenon that is Peat & Diesel. Cunningly titled, Peat & Diesel, the song is a fitting tribute to Lewis three-piece tour de force. Light my Byre indeed.
So, what is this new mysterious track I talk of? It has been named as the best indie/post punk song of all time. Was voted single of the year by NME in the year of its release. It is an undisputed classic and an anthem for the disaffected. Hell, it is an anthem for millions. And was once covered by… apologies… Paul Young.
It is of course the mighty Love Will Tear Us Apart. But this is a version of Love Will Tear Us Apart the like of which you will never have heard before, or indeed will again. So, what can you expect from this version?
First up, it’s a lot faster than the original. So far so good.
Next, it’s in instrumental. What about the melody I hear you ask – how is that recreated. Is it not obvious? Bagpipes of course! What else? As someone who played the bagpipes from the age of 11 until I was in the 40’s, it almost made me want to crawl into the loft and dig out my seized-up set… almost.
Add to that some crunching punchy guitars, a wee ska rhythm to get you bouncin’ and a thunderous pounding drum roar and yer almost there. Listen out for the keyboard flourishes towards the end in tribute to another legend, the late Dave Greenfield.
Joy Division to skank to. What more could you want. Time to hae a ball – keep it Oary.
I’m awa’ tae bang it on again. You’ll have to wait…
I’ll leave you with this one…
