Monsterpop – Another Dream EP review

Another Dream monsterpop EP

Monster /ˈmɒnstə/ (noun)

a thing of extraordinary or daunting size.

Pop /pɒp/ (noun)

a light explosive sound.

“there were a few pops, perhaps from pistols”

(noun)

Commercial popular music. In particular accessible, tuneful music of a kind popular since the 1950s. Sometimes contrasted with rock, soul, or other forms of popular music.

Based on these definitions and to coin an old phrase. Monsterpop does exactly what it says on the tin. And I intentionally left in the example sentence used under the definition of pop.

The new EP (available now on Bandcamp) Another Dream amplifies the explosive pop sound to daunting proportions. This is power pop punk rock on steroids, with riffing to rival the Pistols style that endured into early incarnations of The Professionals.

Despite what some people might tell you “pop” isn’t a dirty word. Yeah, of course there is some mightily awful manufactured pop music around, autotuned to fuck. But when you have someone who gets it, things come together naturally with an end product that is accessible, but more importantly eminently, and addictively,  listenable.

Knowing how to entertain in several guises – mixing punk and pop classics in highly entertaining live sets as part of Three Minute Heroes, inciting mass joy and sing-alongs as part of Massaoke – Monsterpop maestro Jimmy is an unashamed fan of power pop, as he should be. A slick guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, he has studied the craft, and understanding the effect of an addictive riff and a soaring melody has lovingly sculpted the three tracks on this EP to ensure they become the earworms that they are.

Get your power pop on, and get onto Bandcamp now to grab a slice of sunshine to brighten up your miserable day…
