Part three of the December round up includes an appearance from the legendary Scottish institution that is The Primevals, Dundee punks and all round good guys The Cundeez, young Chicago slacker rock trio Horsegirl, Sheffield’s Reverend and the Makers, The Furio and Scottish “superduo’ Arrows Meet.
The Primevals – I’m the Man-Wulf
An instantly addictive prime cut from The Primevals in the shape of the compelling primal roar of a garage rock belter that is I’m the Man-Wulf, a song commissioned by comedian Stewart Lee to soundtrack his upcoming stand up tour. There is a forceful and engaging urgency to I’m the Man-Wulf that digs its claws into the jugular of the listener and refuses to let go. A late contender for single of the year.
The Cundeez – Jean Geggus
This is a joyous bagpipe-laden 5 minute romp celebrating Jean Geggus, the mother of the Cockney Rejects brothers. The single opens with a bagpipe intro of Maybe It’s Because I’m a Londoner before the tune morphs into a raucous bagpipe punk version of Bowle’s Jean Genie. Brilliant.
Horsegirl – Julie
Another glorious cut of laid-back slacker rock from the young Chicago trio ahead of the release of their second album, Phonetics On and On coming in February 2025
Reverend and the Makers – Late Night Phone Call
The title of the song says it all, a lyrical take on a drunken declaration of love to his partner (and her “sweet apple crumble”) after drinking what Jon McClure describes as “sweet a gallon of Guinness.” The single is a tie in with suicide prevention charity, Samaritans.
The Furio – Let it All Fall
Another tie-in with supporting charity this festive season is Let it All Fall from Glasgow alt-rock band The Furio, who have set up a GoFundMe page for St Andrews Hospice (link below). The single itself has a tenacious energy, packed full of searing riffs and an ardent, earnestly delivered vocal, rising in tempo in its last quarter to an energetic crescendo.
Arrows Meet – One Short Night
What do you get if you cross a Nanobot with a f.o. Machete? You get the fantastic Arrows Meet of course, once again delighting listeners with another exquisite electro-pop banger in the shape of One Short Night, the combination of foot-twitching grooves and Natasha’s unique breathy vocal making this song entrancing and irresistible.
