Cockwomble
My favourite modern made-up word and one of the new derogatory terms aimed at the 45th person, I use the term loosely, to run the most powerful country in the word. By default, then, also my favourite new band name, alongside Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.
All of the Money! None of the Style!
The band’s four track EP of alt-pop/punk injected with an element of humour proves that you can be in a band with a sense of humour, have fun, enjoy what you do, but aim to make a point with your music while making a pleasing racket at the same time.
Cockwomble was a word aimed at Trump after he made one of his many unthought out comments or tweets using his limited grasp of language and vocabulary. The title track of the EP, packed with an element of riot grrrl attitude to complement the powerful sound, could well be aimed at him, the least classy or presidential President, well, ever. “You can buy power, but you can’t buy class.”
WANT STUFF BUY STUFF
Overt consumerism is targeted in WANT STUFF BUY STUFF. This frenetic one-and-a-half-minute thrashy romp including thumping drum breaks feels like what is going on in someone’s head as they speed round the shops buying shit they don’t need. “Want more stuff. Stuff, stuff, stuff. Gonna buy more stuff…”
Henry XXXXXV highlights how unfathomably ridiculous it is that in the 21st century we still have inbred royalty who people bow down to while the country is awash with people living below the poverty line. The pointed comical lyrics run alongside an elegant guitar line that recalls one of Prince’s latter guitar heavy tracks, the eponymously titled Guitar.
The Punk Police
On final track Punk in a Dress, I can totally relate to the subject matter in the bouncing power pop/The Boys sounding punk infused song. Having stopped following various social media punk sites due to the ridiculousness of the some of the conversations by the self-appointed punk police the song is cutting in its criticism of these idiots.
People who constantly question what is and isn’t punk, or what punks should or shouldn’t look like/wear. Or, God forbid, they wear a t-shirt by a band they don’t know any songs by. A cardinal sin. Fuck off you bunch of…cockwombles. Or jizztrumpets, wankpuffins or shitgibbons. “I must have missed the meeting where it spelled out how you dress”
My only criticism of this EP? It is over too soon, I want more. Give us an album soon.
